How to Build a Cat House

11310739755_house.jpgCat houses provide hours of entertainment for your cat, as well as a safe and warm place to rest. Many different designs of cat houses are commercially available for purchase, but these structures are relatively easy and practical to construct. By completely this project on your own, you can customize the house to accommodate one, or many cats, and add or remove as many features as you wish, without adding any significant cost.
1. Purchase the following materials from your local hardware store: 1-4×8 sheet of 3/8″plywood, 3-2x4x8 stud, 1 box of 5/8″ wood screws and some carpet remnants.
2. Cut your plywood board in half, so that you are left with 2 equally sized 4′x4′ squares. Cut these in half and then each of the four pieces in half again. You should now have 8- 2′x2′ equally sized pieces. These will make up the roof, floor and side panels for your cat house.

How to Stop a Cat From Urinating in the House

Lots of cat owners get rid of their cats due to problems related to urinating in the house. The truth is that the majority of them could have been retrained with a little effort on the owner’s side. Your cat is not spiteful; they simply don’t know what spite is so they aren’t doing it because you changed their brand of cat food! Cats that stop using a litter box are doing it for a reason. How to Solve Your Cat’s Spraying Problem

If you’re having a problem with your cat constantly spraying and marking its territory there are several things that you can do to try and curb this activity. This is one area where many cat owners experience a lot of frustration with their cat because this behavior can be hard to stop. Are Inside and Outside Cat Houses Interchangeable?

The short answer to whether inside and outside cat houses are interchangeable is “No.” But the real question is why. From the look of things, both types provide cats with a protected, cozy space to call their own. The thing is, the needs for an outdoor cat vary like night and day from the needs of an indoor cat. Consequently, so do their housing needs. The following describes both types of houses and why one won’t necessarily work as the other. How to Build a Cat Scratching Post

When you bring home a kitten, you’re giving yourself a friend for life. The only problem is the kitten won’t stay small and sweet forever. Before you know it, you have a full grown cat, and a house full of destroyed furniture. Want to save your furniture and your sanity? Try building your cat a scratching post, from scratch! Here’s how to do it:Cut all three of your 2x4x8 studs into equal 2′ lengths. You should now have twelve 2′ sections.
4. Configure the stud sections into the shape of a box and attach them with the wood screws.
5. Attach the floor, roof, side pieces, and back panel to the frame with wood screws.
6. Cut a small opening into the front panel, large enough for the cat to easily walk in and out but not too large as to let in a draft, and then attach it to the frame.
7. Cover the entire house in carpet remnants. Attach the carpet with a staple gun. This gives the cat something to scratch and stretch his claws on, instead of the furniture.
8. Place some bedding material in the cat house, like a pre-made cat bed, or a warm blanket for the cat to nest in.
The do-it-yourself cat house is now complete.
This house should remain indoors as the house is not protected from the rain. If you would prefer to have it outside, add a triangular frame to the top of the house and nail shingles in place to allow for rain runoff. The carpet remnants should not be added to a cat house that will remain outdoors as the carpet will sour and trap water against the plywood, causing it to rot. Also, a coat of water sealant may be applied in order to prolong the house’s useful life.
A cat house doesn’t have to be extravagant or expensive in order to give your cat a safe and warm place to sleep. Try variations on the basic plan above, to add your own personal touch.

However, the 163 acres does not encompass the entire zoo. There is a second section that is used for conservation and research that is 3,200 acres in size.

This section is located in Front Royal, Virginia. The National Zoo is the home of 2,000 animals which encompasses over 400 varying species.

One fifth of the animals showcased in the zoo are listed as endangered or threatened by endanger. The most popular animals at the zoo include giant pandas, birds, great apes, big cats, Asian elephants, insects, amphibians, reptiles, aquatic animals, and many other creatures.

Only thirty to forty of the endangered species they showcase are held at Washington D.C.
at any one time as many of the species are needed for research as scientists try to discover ways in which they can preserve these species. The zoo is open every day except for December 25th.

The National Zoo was created through an Act of Congress which decided that it would help advance science and the education of the people. In the beginning, the zoo was only home to one or two types of animals from a variety of exotic species.

However, the selection of animals became much more varied later on. As people began capturing animals for zoos and becoming involved in other activities, the zoos became concerned about the decrease in population for many of the animals.

As a result they decided to focus on the conservation of the animals, rather than their entertainment value in zoos. The first full-time, permanent veterinarian for the National Zoo was not hired until the 1950s.

This action demonstrates how the attitude toward the animals held in the zoo changed. In addition, around this time, Congress was persuaded to change how the National Zoo was funded so that it had a more steady and consistent income that could be relied on.

With a steady and consistent income, it was able to expand even further. As scientists began to further study the animals, they discovered that it was generally better to put them in natural groupings rather than separating all of the species into individuals and pairs.

The animals seemed to be happier and reproduce better in these situations. The main attraction of the zoo is the giant pandas which have called it home for over thirty years.

In 1972, a pair of pandas named Hsing Hsing and Ling Ling were loved by the nation. Then in 2000, another pair of pandas named Mei Xiang and Tian Tian joined the zoo.

Five years later on July 9, 2005, Mei Xiang gave birth to Tai Shan to the joy of all involved. Tai Shan traveled back to China in 2010, but also loved by the people while he was here.

Other Asian species have also seen a rejuvenation of their species. These species include the sloth bears, red pandas, and clouded leopards.

In addition, Asian elephants are scheduled to be added to the zoo in 2012. They will be kept in an exhibit called Elephant Trails.

The zoo is supported by tax revenues that the government collects, so visiting the zoo for free is a great way to get part of your tax money back. This zoo consistently receives more than two million visitors every year.

The zoo also hosts many special events and it is constantly changing. This is a great place to teach children about the wildlife found throughout the world and the importance of biology in a very fun and entertaining way.

If you want to train up your dog and are considering buying a chain dog collar, there are some advantages and disadvantages to consider before making an investment. This article looks more closely at some of them. The chain dog collar has been one of the most notable dog collars in existence as it is the type that has been around for the longest period of time.In such circumstances, one can keep a wildlife like a hedgehog or gecko as a pet as they do not require that much space. Some wild animals have their own benefits. Like a hedgehog can be used to keep insects and others pests at bay in a house.
Often it has been seen purchasing a wild animal can be cheaper than purchasing a pet that is popular and has a pedigree.
Also, many proponents of wild animals feel that some species have a better chance of survival if they are adopted. It has been seen that the dart frog is facing a problem in the wild as its natural habitat is diminishing. Hence, if this animal is adopted, it will have a better chance of survival.
However, there are sufficient cons and disadvantages of owning wild animals as pets. First of all, one has to take into consideration the welfare of the animal. Having a wildlife means giving due consideration to its diet, exercise and social interactions. Often, the animal will not have any interaction with other animals of its own species and will be left to leading a lonely and solitary life. Also, the owners will not be equipped to provide proper care to the animals as they may not be well-versed in these things. Many wild animals look cute and cuddly when they are small. However, as they reach adulthood or sexual maturity, their wild side takes over and the animal becomes aggressive. This is the time many owners abandon their pets or give them away to zoos.
Wild animals are carriers of many diseases that are lethal to humans. For instance, reptiles and amphibians are carriers of salmonella infection and each year thousand of people in the US contract this disease due to their pets. Also, rats imported from Africa are known to carriers of monkey pox. An outbreak of this disease occurred in the US in 2003 when Gambian rats brought in the monkey pox into the country.
Above all, the demand for wildlife as pet is increasing. So, many illegal traders are taking advantage of this demand. Most of the wild animals are captured and then transported in cruel and inhuman manner to reach their owners. In addition, majority of the owners do not know to take care of the animals and this causes them to fall sick or even die.
So, weigh the pros and cons of having wild animals as pets before jumping to adopt one. Make sure that you are properly equipped to handle the care of the animal. Do not adopt one if you have any doubts.

Tips For Awesome Looking Pet Portraits

f_11310739247_tiger-11.jpgWe love our pets. They do such cute, adorable, and funny things. They are more often than not, an integral part of our family. As such, you probably want to capture your beloved friend with great pet pictures. What if, when you go to take those perfect pet portraits, they run and hide, or simply won’t cooperate? In this article we give some great tips to help you next time you go for that dog photo or pet picture of your best friend.

Here are some tips to help you to get some great pet pictures.

1. The first and most important step that will help the most is training. Your pet does not need to enroll for a 4-year pet school degree with an online dog picture heralding his success, but some simple commands will help. Simple commands like stand, stay, lay down or sit are easy to teach, with some patience added, and will help in taking your pet pictures.

2. Awaking a pet out of a deep sleep and forcing him to face a camera will not give you good results. If you wish to take pictures of your pet, try to take photos while they are playing or relaxing by that nicely lit window. It’s a good idea to have your camera nearby at all times, not just one moment when you decide now is the time to have pet portraits. Take some time with it.

3. Using natural lighting is best. If enough, do not use your flash. Pets often times do not like the flash of a camera; they can learn to squint or run away when they see that camera come out.

4. If your pet is already camera-shy, try being as discreet as possible by not making it so obvious to your pet that you are up to something. Of course, with a cat this can be easier considering the attention span of a cat, but then again, they can be more wise to your ways, knowing that you are indeed up to something…it all depends on the personality of the pet. You can get a great, expressional dog photo just by saying the right word, in the right tone of voice, to a dog, but nice try with a cat.

Go for a nice, sophisticated shot of your cat if he’s a snob. (Remember, you want to capture the essence of your pet in the best ‘light’ possible. If your cat does not fit that stereotype, a relaxed, playful or ‘thoughtful’ look is great. That’s applies not just to cats, but dogs and whatnot too…well, maybe not if your pet is…oh, a snake perhaps.

5. If you are looking for that thoughtful or playful look, look to a friend or family member to help. A string with catnip or honeysuckle works great for a cat, squeaky toys work well with dogs.

6. Stay patient. If you are getting frustrated, time to take a break. It should be a fun, enjoyable time. You want to remember your pet…not the day you worked up a sweat, dusted the floor with your clothes, banged your knee, and yelled at your kids or whatever else trying to get that perfect dog photo. Plus, your pets can pick up on your stress and they may start to associate that camera, or how YOU behave with that camera with a bad time…like teenagers during family portrait time…NOT fun usually.

7. Take your pets coloring into consideration when choosing backgrounds. The less ‘busy’ the scene, the better, as well.

Remember; do not put pressure on your pet to face the camera. If you do want a shot looking directly into the camera, best way to achieve this is by first getting the camera and crop prepared. Once ready to ‘snap’, a louder, unusual sound just before shooting, works best for dogs. A soft, quiet sound, works best for cats to get their attention.

Be prepared to take a lot of bad photos to get a really good one. It will be better if you use a digital camera. With a digital camera you have lots of room for trial and error. You will be able to select your favorites and dispose the rest. Of course, that can be a problem too. If you are anything like me, you hate to erase any photos of your pet.

Most of all see it as fun, not a chore and before you know it you’ll have awesome looking perfect pet portraits of your pet and maybe other pets too!

Cat Fights

f_01310739409_86honturtlex-b.jpgFeral or unferal, your kitty may get tangled up in one of these if they are in particular an outdoor cat. Indoor cats if by themselves are obviously not as prone to this risk, unless they find themselves outside, or a stray visitor inside.. but two or more indoor cats can have their “bad” days as well.

If you allow your cat to roam outside in the big wild outdoors, I seriously recommend you take kitty to your veternarian from a young age and start getting him vaccinated! And make sure this is done every year no questions! This is necessary if you don’t want your kitty to get infected by nasties like Feline Aids (FIV) which is transmitted through blood while fighting. This also protects your kitty among a lot of other different diseases out there like Feline Leukemia
(FLV). It is also highly advisable to get him (or her) neutered. Unspayed males will fight feirsly for a female if she is in heat, which can leave both cats in tatters and spayed males can find themselves in the middle of something they don’t understand if an unspayed males get the wrong idea…

Cats fighting outside at night time can be quite of a shock, as sometimes they can sound close to a child shreking or yelling, and it is definately the last thing you want to hear when your trying to sleep at night! My ultimate way of getting rid of cats engaged in a fight is to turn the hose on them, as noises won’t startle them hardly as they are concentrating too much on the other cat!

For indoor cats, obviously water all over the carpet is unwanted so I find usually placing a large object between the two which will cut of eye contact with both cats, if they are engaged in a fight, don’t get in their way as cat bites can not only hurt, but are more likely to become infected than dog bites. Use a chair and turn upside down and use the back of the chair and gently slide the chair between the cats, this will startle them and stop them from fighting. Give the cats ‘time out’ by placing one in a closed room for a short period of time.

A good tell-tale sign if a cat is frightened, the hair will stand up all over the body and when the cat threatens or is ready to attack, you will see the hair stand up in a narrow band along the spine and tail to make him look bigger, and this is also a good time to get out that hose or chair!

With the average lifespan of an outdoor only cat if they are feral or unferal, is only about three years! Which is why if you love your kitty and want him to have a healthy live, keep him indoors and he can live a whopping 16 years longer!

Not only will you benefit from keeping your kitty living longer indoors, it will save you expensive veternarian bills for infected scratches, broken teeth, torn ears, and so on by these nasty one-on-ones.

Well, there is this Park Hopper special which allow visitors to purchase 3-in-1 or 2-in-1 admission tickets to either three or two of the parks – Jurong Bird Park, Night Safari and Singapore Zoo – at a discounted price. Locals and residents keen to tour several times in a year can sign up for a reasonably-priced membership bundle which comes with perks such as tram rides and complimentary parking.

I would recommend you to purchase the Park Hoppers Special ticket which combines both Singapore Zoo and Night Safari for SGD28 per adult or SGD14 per child of 3-12 years old. Not only it is cost-saving, but the admission ticket is valid for 1 month. At Night Safari, you may take a tram to see the animals in very natural settings. The animal shows are very educational and entertaining. Only at that zoo they navigate around very openly, plus they do not remain inside their hutches like some other animal theme parks. In case you are much like me, who loves to take pictures of these adorable animals, this is actually the time to take action.

There are over a hundred species of animals that visitors can see during your visit to Singapore Zoo and Night Safari. Opening hours of the Night Safari are daily from 19:30 until midnight. If you don’t want to get wet, sit 2 or 3 rows back. Otherwise, this could be an excellent way to surprise your little ones or your travel companions. buy 3-in-1 or 2-in-1 Park Hoppers and purchase a combo ticket that would admit you to visit the Zoo the next day and hopped on one of the last tram rides starting the loop through the park.

Someone asked me why I’d consistently want to go to the zoo whenever I visit a country. Aside from testing my photography skills (or the lack thereof) for wild animal shoots, I wittingly replied “Show me your country’s best zoo and I will tell you how well-fed your people are”. The visitors get a time to walk through this tunnel and get a three dimensional view of marine life all around them in a natural environment. You will find the sharks, stingrays, eels and groups of fishes swimming all around. In 2009, 1.6 million visitors enjoyed the experiential learning adventure at the 28-hectare award-winning Zoo. The Zoo is a designated rescued wildlife centre by the governing authority.

With an average of 1.5 million visitors a year, it is ranked as the most Zoo in the world. Set in a rainforest environment, the Singapore zoo offers around 2530 specimens and 315 different animal species of which 16% are endangered species. The tram tour is highly recommended otherwise visitors will do a lot of walking and the eastern part of the park is not accessible by walking. At the second tram station there is a walking path ‘The Leopard Trail’ for viewing giraffes, flying squirrels, lions and other animals.

The animals are kept in spacious, landscaped enclosures, separated from the visitors by dry or wet moats. The moats are concealed alongside vegetation or dropped below the line of vision.
